Statement from The Velvet Burlesque:

* Coronavirus (COVID-19) update *
I am heartbroken to announce that due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak, Sheffield City Hall remain closed for the foreseeable future, therefore The Grand Hallowe'en Ball on Saturday 31st October 2020 has been cancelled.

All ticket-holders have been notified of their options via email (sent to the email address you have registered with PayPal/other payment correspondence or directly via Sheffield City Hall).

Please contact The Velvet Burlesque for further information.

As the majority of you know from my website, mailing lists and social media posts, I run all the shows/events as 'not-for-profit'. All my shows/events are initially entirely self-funded, and I then nail-bitingly wait to rely on ticket sales to recoup towards the overheads.

I do not take any money/wages or anything financially for myself for these events! Nothing - zero - nada - ziltch!

Your ticket money pays for the performers, the venue, the staff, the lighting & sound equipment, the licences and insurances, and all the rest of the (many, many!) event overheads. Any profit from the events is rolled right back into the next show, which is why I can continue to offer such incredible value for money with all my events.

* I earn my living teaching, performing, and producing private/corporate events. Public-based shows are my passion for the industry I am in, and something I want to share with as many people as I can.

Financially for 2020, the Covid-19 crisis has already set me back thousands & thousands of pounds, as I've already paid out for venues, licences, insurances, performers, flights, trains, buses, hotels, equipment hire, promotional materials and promotional production costs (etc., etc.) for all my upcoming events this year. As you may know, a lot of these production costs need covering well in advance of the business year starting, and nobody could have predicted this current situation we find ourselves in. The majority of these production costs are also all non-refundable.

My event insurance won't cover any of my business losses as it's classed as "Force Majeure".

I have not been eligible for any government grant or support for my business/as a self-employed business owner.

I've also now got to reschedule or refund tickets out of my own pocket as the 'ticket-pot' money has already been sunk into all the 2020 shows.
My dance & fitness classes and own performance bookings have been cancelled since March, and the entertainment & leisure lockdown extension continues for a yet unknown length of time.

I stand in solidarity with shows and performers around the UK and indeed the world – all UK stages and theatres will remain dark for many more months to come. Myself and my cast are sad that we can’t perform for you publicly – especially at a time when we all need the power of theatre/performance. The financial impact of postponing/cancelling shows & events will be significant to so many of us within the entertainment industry, and as above, it may well threaten the future of a great deal of our valuable live entertainment all around the world.

I know that so many of us are in the same boat, and my heart honestly goes out to any one of you who is also currently battling with a business or a job that is now critically at risk. I can only hope that all of us get through this with our health! (Not quite sure about our sanity right now, though … this sh*t is bloody hard!)

Take good care of yourselves, and please stay safe.
