The Hallé with Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus and Leeds Festival Chorus
Sheffield International Concert Season 2021/22
Oval Hall | Sheffield City Hall
Programme: BRITTEN Peter Grimes: Four Sea Interludes (16), ADÈS Inferno Suite (20), WALTON Belshazzar's Feast (36)
In the same month as the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, it seems only fitting to round off the 2021-22 Sheffield International Concert Season with a concert celebrating British composers and artists.
Conductor Finnegan Downie Dear brings together the massed forces of Manchester’s Hallé orchestra, Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus and Leeds Festival Chorus, along with baritone Benjamin Nelson, for a performance of William Walton’s dramatic cantata, Belshazzar’s Feast. First performed at the 1931 Leeds Festival, featuring two brass bands, the richly orchestrated music reflects the composer’s interest in jazz and other popular music.
Benjamin Britten’s brilliantly-realised Four Sea Interludes were written as clever scene changes for his opera Peter Grimes, telling the dark tale of the cantankerous yet misunderstood fisherman. Now often heard in the concert hall as a standalone orchestral tone poem, the interludes are at times chilling, beautiful and extremely vivid. Thomas Adès’s dazzlingly orchestrated showstopper, Inferno, was described by the LA Times as ‘a sizzling, cracking whip of a piece'.
