The Brigantes, Sheffield’s new professional symphony orchestra, makes its Oval Hall debut led by conductor Quentin Clare and featuring the dynamic pianist Christopher Devine in a programme of pieces with their roots in jazz. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is paired with his Variations for Piano and Orchestra based on the popular tune, “I Got Rhythm”.

Also featured is a rare performance of the Afro-American Symphony by composer William Grant Still which is brimming with blues, jazz, spirituals and the sound of the early musicals. Until the 1950s, this instantly accessible piece was the best-known and most played of all symphonies by an American composer.
