Tramlines Fringe: Desperate Journalist at Sheffield City Hall

Tramlines Fringe: Desperate Jounalist | Sheffield City Hall
Memorial Hall

Tickets £3.36 advance, £4.48 on the door (inc. booking fee)

Acclaimed North London post punk band Desperate Journalist visit the City Hall's intimate and atmospheric Memorial Hall for an unmissable performance as part of Tramlines Fringe 2019. Support comes from Sheffield's own hotly tipped indie darlings Sophie and the Giants.

Desperate Journalist consist of Jo Bevan on vocals, Simon Drowner on bass, guitarist Rob Hardy and drummer Caz Hellbent. Lured together by fate and a fierce sense of what makes alternative music actually really bloody alternative, they started their journey at the local Negative Creep grunge club night in Finsbury Park on February 23rd 2013 and have barely looked back since.

After self-releasing debut EP 'Cristina' they were quickly signed by Fierce Panda, who released 'Organ' and 'Happening' as singles, leading to their debut album, 'Desperate Journalist', in November 2014. The Quietus, reviewing said album, described them as "beautiful and spellbinding"; Drowned in Sound said that they had "effortless grace" and praised Bevan's vocals.

Their second album, 'Grow Up', was released in March 2017 to much acclaim, alongside festival appearances at Wave-Gotik-Treffen, Tramlines and Benicassim and the band followed that up in 2018 releasing a brand new EP ‘You Get Used To It’.

Desperate Journalist returned to the thoroughly frayed musical fray with a brand new (and suitably autumnal) single called ‘Cedars’ on November 2nd 2018, with the follow-up track 'Satellite' released on January 11th. Propelled along by Rob Hardy’s startlingly lush guitar and empowered by frankly cracking hooklines from singer Jo Bevan both ‘Cedars’ and 'Satellite' catch the quartet honing their sensitive-yet-crushing alt.rock sound, relishing the old school DIY dynamics but never afraid to magic up a shiny modern melody or three.

‘Cedars’ and 'Satellite' are the first tracks to come from Desperate Journalist’s third album 'In Search of the Miraculous', released on February 22nd 2019.

Having recently indiepopped up supporting the likes of The Wedding Present and Marion and headlined a special pre-Christmas Stoke Newington underplay, Desperate Journalist return to Sheffield with even more critical praise and audience acclaim under their belt, ready to stage one of the highlight shows in this year's Tramlines Fringe.

Tickets for Tramlines Fringe: Desperate Journalist (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
