 five40five is a new musical experience held in the spectacular ballroom at Sheffield City Hall. Commencing at 5:45pm these stylish events are a surprising assortment of contemporary classical concerts, totally unique to Sheffield.
Entertain... five40five is designed so that guests can enjoy socialising and after work entertaining. The informal lounge bar is open throughout the duration of the evening and nibbles are available. Each event will take place in the elegant ballroom and will be individually styled to create a mood that emulates the theme of each concert. The relaxed atmosphere and comfortable seating will allow guests to consume the musical delights and eat, drink and network during the regular intervals in performances.
Listen... The informal style and convivial ambience is accompanied by music that is performed by some of the finest soloists and world class orchestras. You will hear a mix of classical masterworks and contemporary compositions, with some improvised on the spot. Guests will be informed about the music, its origins and influence with artists interacting with audience throughout the evening.five40five welcomes audiences curious about classical music and contemporary sounds. The diversity of styles will broaden your musical horizons and the programme has been designed to surprise. Simply unwind after work and enjoy the stunning acoustics and elegant décor of the ballroom.

Tuesday 29 April 2008 Philip Thomas Sheffield's Phil Thomas has his own informal approach, with conversational introductions to the iconic piano music of the 20th century. You'll hear some of the most influential artists from the UK and the States, including music by John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Christopher Fox, Alvin Curran, Laurence Crane and John Lely - this is music that has influenced many rock and contemporary classical composers of our time.
Thursday 8 May 2008 String Trios from Manchester Camerata five40five guests will hear a series of compositions, traditionally intended for performance in a private room or small concert hall, performed by soloists from the regions finest chamber orchestra. Manchester Camerata is the region's premiere chamber orchestra. You will hear the beautiful sounds of violin, viola and cello playing early Beethoven (Vienna, 1800s) and the more contemporary British music of David Matthews. The three leading players will demonstrate what makes a chamber orchestra so special, with chamber playing at its most intimate.
Friday 23 May 2008 Bandish Bandish is led by musician John Ball of Sheffield University. This group of four maestro musicians play tabla, sitar, African drums and classical/jazz flute. The group came together from contrasting musical cultures to explore the common ground between music from diverse backgrounds. The artists fuse South Asian, jazz, African drumming and Western classical, with improvisation at the core of their performances. You can expect to hear an inventive and original display of musical brilliance.
Thursday 5 June 2008 Sheffield Cathedral Choir with the Dante String Quartet The men of Sheffield Cathedral choir are a small chamber choir with a reputation as one of the country's finest cathedral choirs. They perform at five40five with the Dante Quartet, who are Royal Philharmonic Society award winners. Guests will hear the string quartet (two violins, viola and cello) perform pure string quartet music. Part of the musical performance will be unaccompanied choral music which will be followed by a performance of new work by English composer Roxana Panufnik.This concert brings together two great Western classical musical traditions and brings the five40five series of musical experimentation and exploration to a close.
