five40five 2010

Sheffield City Hall’s early evening concert series returns in 2010 with another exciting line up of soloists and orchestras. The first of 9 concerts in the series takes place on Wednesday 9 June 2010, with the return of the award winning contemporary music ensemble Psappha.

Fusing the classical with the contemporary, the five40five series has achieved enormous success over the last couple of years since it was first launched back in 2008. The series continues to offer a unique programme of music and a refreshing change to standardised classical formats.

The 2010 line up features a mixture of series regulars and those making their five40five debut. One particular debut to look forward is young violin virtuoso Charlie Siem who stunned Sheffield International Concert goers when he performed alongside the Czech National Symphony Orchestra back in February. In addition to this Ensemble 360’s Tim Horton makes his five40five debut with his Trio in September while the Manchester Camerata are set to join forces with Sheffield’s Off The Shelf Festival for the first time, for a unique concert of music set to readings by local writers. Five40five regulars returning include the likes of the Hallé String Ensemble, Samay, pianist Philip Thomas, Tango 5 and of course Psappha.

Psappha’s opening concert promises an unmissable evening, presenting the music of Swedish composer Fredrik Hogberg, American Jazz Pianist Lyle Mays and British Born Anna Clyne, whom Riccardo Muti recently appointed as Composer-in-Residence at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.  The evening features the European Premieres of three films that accompany Anna Clyne's music, who will be at the concert herself to introduce her work. A fantastic opening to what is set to be the most exciting five40five series yet.

With each concert commencing at 5.45pm, the five40five concerts are noted for their informal style, set against the stunning surroundings of the City Hall Ballroom. In addition, one of the further special features of the concerts is that musicians introduce their pieces and give the audience some background on the music they are about to hear. These mini concerts offer a perfect opportunity for a spot of after work relaxation and a great way to break up a busy week, plus they won’t break the bank either with tickets priced at a bargain of £5.
