Celebrating 75 years of Excellence

Sheffield City Hall, celebrated its 75th Anniversary last week and to mark the occasion, the venue hosted a glamorous gala dinner.  Local and regional businesses, suppliers, press and tourism organisations across the region attended the high profile event to celebrate this great achievement.

Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed an exquisite 6 course banquet, prepared on site by the Hall's team of skilled chefs. Entertainment for the evening was provided by one of the UK's finest vocalists and rhythm & blues piano players, TJ Johnson, accompanied by his band.

Built of Darley Dale stone, Sheffield City Hall first opened its doors on 22nd September 1932 by Lord Mayor T H Watkins. The architect was E. Vincent Harris (1876-1971), who was a well respected municipal architect. He was one of the last exponents of the classical revival style. In its day the City Hall boasted "one of the most modern air conditioning plants in the country...and is frequently demonstrated...as an example of the best possible type of modern ventilation"

Since 1932 City Hall has played host to some of the most famous names of the 20th century including Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello and Billy Connolly to name but a few, along with the filming of popular TV programmes such as the X Factor, Pot Black World Snooker and the Antiques Roadshow.

Since re-opening in 2005, following a £12.5 million refurbishment, Sheffield City Hall is making a big impact in the corporate events market. The best standards of accessibility, comfort and service have helped to cement its reputation as the region's leading conference and events venue.

City Hall's General Manager Dominic Stokes thanked guests for coming to celebrate 75 successful years for the venue and commented that "City Hall has a magic atmosphere, hosting such a variety of events and we are all looking forward to another 75 years of fantastic entertainment."
