Final Concert in the 2009 10 Sheffield International Concert Season
Okko Kamu - conductor
Alisa Weilerstein - cello
Dvorák Carnival Overture
Dvorák Cello Concerto
Sibelius Symphony No.1
Alisa Weilerstein captivated Sheffield audiences last season with her tantalising performance of Dvorák's Silent Woods, and the Hallé could not wait to bring her back in one of the most popular concertos ever written - Dvorák's nostalgic Cello Concerto. The Finnish conductor, Okko Kamu is one of the greatest interpreters of Sibelius's music, and the Hallé are an orchestra with a reputation for bringing intensity and fire to his music. This not-to-be-missed evening features the composer's bold First Symphony, written when he was in his early 30s. Dvorák's boisterous Carnival Overture depicts a rumbustious peasant fair offset by the image of coolly tranquil Bohemian woods.
