See www.classicalweekend.com for the full weekend programme.
In the first of his two concerts here this season, Sheffield-born Hallé Principal Guest Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth conducts Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, one of the composer’s most accessible and attractive creations. The first movement recalls the Viennese classical style, the second evokes the grim fiddler of German folklore and the third is a sublime slow movement. Finally, Elizabeth Watts joins the orchestra with the depiction of a child's vision of paradise, with sweets in profusion and bread baked by angels. The concert opens with Johann Strauss' waltz masterpiece The Blue Danube and a slection of exquisite orchestral songs by the other great unrelated Strauss, Richard. Tonight's concert is part of the Classical Weekend festival.
