The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and their Principal Conductor Vasily Petrenko make their return to Sheffield with an all-Sibelius programme. The stirring Finlandia and rhapsodic Violin Concerto conjure up images of Finland's northern forests and lakes. Jack Liebeck is one of the most exciting young British violinists of his generation and he performs this magnificent, thrilling piece which reflects the composer's own youthful ambition to be a concert violinist. Sibelius composed much of his eloquent Second Symphony in Italy where he imagined ‘roses in bloom, camellias, almond trees, magnolia, cypresses, vines, palm trees...' and yet the monumental finale conjures up the majestic Finnish landscape so familiar to him.
