Howard Shelley conductor and piano
Britten Simple Symphony
Mozart Piano Concerto No.17 in G
Elgar Serenade for Strings
Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor
The distinguished pianist and conductor Howard Shelley makes a welcome return to Sheffield City Hall with the equally distinguished London Mozart Players. Shelley is soloist in Mozart’s subtle and intimate G Major Concerto and later conducts the same composer’s intensely dark and dramatic Symphony No. 40. Hearing this work is always a deeply rewarding and cathartic experience. Britten’s ‘Simple’ Symphony is based on themes the composer wrote between the ages of nine and twelve. With four movements titled ‘Boisterous’ ‘Bourrée’, ‘Playful Pizzicato’, ‘Sentimental Sarabande’ and ‘Frolicsome Finale’, it is huge fun for players and audiences alike! Elgar’s nostalgic Serenade is another masterly work for string orchestra and one of which its composer and his audiences always remained particularly fond.
