Memory of Dave set to live with big Sheffield concert
The charity efforts and achievements of former radio presenter Dave Kilner are set to live on.
Sheffield synthpop band, Heaven 17 have confirmed they will be joining the line-up for the tribute concert in memory of former radio presenter Dave Kilner.
The trio of Martyn Ware, Ian Craig Marsh and Glenn Gregory, who formed from the remnants of The Human League in the early 1980s, will perform at Dave Kilner: A Night to Remember on Friday 30 April 2010.
Heaven 17 join a host of other entertainment stars and bands linked to Sheffield who are set to play on the night. Names so far include Joe Elliot and Rick Savage from legendary rock group Def Leppard, Tony Christie, singer/songwriter John Parr of ‘St Elmo’ Fire’ fame and impressionist Jon Culshaw.
Organisers of the concert – are talking to other big names from Sheffield and are very confident of making further announcements the coming weeks about additional acts to join the line-up.
The idea for the concert came from Dave’s widow Shirley and his two daughters Rebecca and Nicola. “We have chosen local bands and artists who Dave helped and supported through his career. Originally this concert was going to be a celebration of Dave's 30 years in broadcasting but sadly now it will be a fitting tribute to him. All the money raised will go to help local disadvantaged children which Dave was so passionate about,” added Shirley. The concert in April is raising money for Help A Child, Have A Chance, a new charity set up in Dave's memory that will help disadvantaged children in South Yorkshire.
Dave died aged 48. Born and bred in Sheffield, the father-of-two who lived in Whirlow had been ill for some time and died in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. A radio presenter with the best contacts book in the local world of showbiz and sport, he was also a prominent voice at Sheffield United, in fundraising for local charities and even in pantomime.
As a DJ with Radio Hallam and Hallam FM that he made his initial major impression. Starting as a 17-year-old trainee, he was with the radio station for more than 20 years. He eventually moved to Magic AM before becoming one of the guiding forces behind Peak FM when the Chesterfield station was launched. Then he returned to Magic AM.
After his radio career, he became fundraising manager for Help A Hallam Child, running charity balls and other events.
Gold, silver and bronze sponsorship packages are also now available for the concert. Anthony Hinchcliffe, of Ant Marketing, has become the first person to sign up for a package, sponsoring Def Leppard duo Joe Elliott and Rick Savage. For more information about the packages please ring Shirley Kilner on 07507 600146.
