Russian State Symphony OrchestraSheffield International Concert Season 2007/8 present Russian State Symphony Orchestra

Mark Gorenstein Conductor
Dmitri Alexeev Piano

Mussorgsky - Night on a Bare Mountain
Scriabin - Piano Concerto
Rachmaninov - Symphony No 2

The Russian State Symphony Orchestra has played a leading role touring Russian culture across the world since its foundation in 1936. It was the first independent Russian Symphony Orchestra to tour internationally and it continues to thrill audiences worldwide with expert interpretations of the Russian repertoire.

Scriabin and Rachmaninov both wrote intensely sensuous music. Scriabin was particularly influenced by colour, the music containing a rich palette of harmonies. Rachmaninov’s second symphony is his most passionate evocation of his native Russia, with one of the most exquisite tunes at its heart, written by this master of melody.
