Sheffield International Concert Season 2007/8 present H K Gruber Conductor
Strauss II - Perpetuum Mobile Gruber - Charivari Hindemith - Ragtime Stravinsky - Scherzo a la Russe Weill - Threepenny Opera Suite Antheil - Jazz Symphony Stravinsky - Tango Weill - Symphony No 2
One of the major talents of post-war music H K Gruber lists Berg, Stravinsky, cabaret and pop music as influences on his own music, but whatever stylistic ingredients he uses, he remains inimitably himself whether conducting, composing or singing.
H K Gruber’s own compositions have been labelled 'new-Romantic', 'neo-tonal', 'neo-expressionistic' and 'neo-Viennese', but his approach to music remains refreshingly non-doctrinaire - a deceptively simple and darkly ironic idiom which often includes a heavy dose of black humour.
The BBC Philharmonic is as versatile and virtusoic orchestra as any in the world and here present a concert of music reflecting both the tastes of H K Gruber himself, and also of the underground music world of Vienna, covering a range of styles all steeped in humour and innovation.
